Empowered by Education: Martha O’Bryan Participant Masters HammerMath and Transforms Career
Jessica had always dreamed about becoming a welder, but always struggled in math and problem solving in school. Determined to make a change, Jessica joined the Martha O’Bryan Center’s Industry Career Bootcamp, where she embarked on a transformative journey to overcome her fear of math and advance her career.
During the intensive Bootcamp, Jessica was introduced to HammerMath, a learning program for experiencing, mastering and applying fractions concepts to the real world. Under the guidance of experienced instructors and with the support of her peers, Jessica quickly grasped the fundamentals of the basic math she needed to obtain a job in construction. She learned how to use basic strategies to create accurate estimates, analyze project costs, and streamline workflow processes.
More than just mastering technical skills, Jessica gained confidence in her abilities and discovered a newfound passion for the intersection of mathematics and practical application in construction. Inspired by her experience at Martha O’Bryan, Jessica decided to further her education in construction management, leveraging her HammerMath proficiency as a cornerstone for her career aspirations.
With guidance from Martha O’Bryan’s career counselors, Jessica enrolled in a specialized welding certification program, with a local Workforce Development partner, where she continued to hone her skills in construction estimating and project management. Her dedication and expertise caught the attention of a prominent welding company in Nashville, which offered her an independent contractor welder position.
Jessica excelled in her new career, applying her HammerMath knowledge to real-world projects and earning praise for her precision and attention to detail.
Today, Jessica serves as an inspiration to others at Martha O’Bryan Center. Her success story demonstrates the transformative impact of education and vocational training, proving that with determination, support, and the right skills, anyone can achieve their career goals.
