Transforming the

Odds for All

We build proven pathways to college for first-generation, low-income students. By increasing student aspirations and by providing wrap-around coaching supports, we help students overcome social inequities, pursue life-long learning, and earn high quality certificates and post-secondary degrees.

Need

Less than 30% of Nashville high school graduates obtain a post-secondary degree.  We purposefully partner with local high schools that have the lowest college-going rates, highest percentage of economically disadvantaged students, and greatest need for wrap-around college access and success services.

Approach and Innovation

Modeled after college student unions, our Academic Student Unions (ASUs) are vibrant, teen-driven spaces designed to support 9-12 grade students on their academic journey.  ASUs are school-based, open to all, and flexible to students’ schedules.

Services include:

Tutoring and homework assistance
College exploration, application, and financial aid coaching
Social-emotional counseling
Leadership development
Job training workshops and connections to paid work experiences
Art, dance, music, photography, and STEM enrichment activities

Dedicated Coaches

Recognizing the unique needs of first-generation college students, the supports provided in our ASUs seamlessly continue in our Post-Secondary Success (PSS) program. Our dedicated PSS coaches provide individualized coaching (in-person and virtually) and connect students with essential on-campus supports and key resources.

Peer Mentors

Older students also lead by example helping younger students build community and navigate school supports. Drawing upon their personal experiences, peer mentors provide valuable guidance and assistance, foster a sense of belonging, and promote inclusivity to help new students feel acknowledged and supported.

Empowering Students

Our ASU and PSS programs operate under the fundamental belief that empowering students is essential for building aspirations, cultivating a culture of attainment, and transforming the odds for all.  That is why students self-select to participate, as we work to create “buy-in”, where staff believes in them, peer to peer support is present, and students lead by example.  When students see their old brothers and sisters, classmates, and neighbors attending college, they see that it is viable and attainable, aspiration becoming achievement.
