Liz, Her Journey from Martha O’Bryan Led to a Full-Time Career

 

The Martha O’Bryan Center’s Family Success Network helps families regain stability and build a secure future. From parenting classes and drop-in and drop-off childcare services to Adult Education programs and Career Pathways bootcamps and certification classes, we are empowering people to take the lead in goal setting, pursuit, and attainment.

Just over a year ago, Liz, a single mom of two, was at a crossroads—working overnight shifts while caring for her boys during the day with no support network after moving to Nashville. But Liz made a powerful choice: she decided to pursue her GED at the Martha O’Bryan Center and create a better future for herself and her children.

MOBC provided Liz with childcare and meals for her kids as well as the emotional encouragement she needed to keep going.

“They gave me the strength to break the cycle,” Liz said.

After earning her GED, Liz enrolled in MOBC’s Career Pathways program for Information Technology (IT) and soon earned important IT certification.

We asked Liz to share her journey at our Champions Breakfast in 2024, and she made an open call to the audience for a chance to interview for an IT job.

Thanks to her resilience and drive, she earned a position at Zander Insurance, where she has taken a large step towards the career she dreamed of, along with the joy of being more present for her children.

“I get to put my kids to bed every night now,” Liz says. “That’s worth more than any paycheck.”

Liz’s journey is far from over. She is now seeking to gain more education, increase her income, and provide her children with life experiences. In the meantime, she credits the Martha O’Bryan Center for playing a pivotal role in her success, saying, “They were the family I never had. I wouldn’t be where I am without them.”

Liz’s story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to change the trajectory of your life. Her message to others: “Don’t wait for life to make room for your goals. Make room for them, now.”
