Liz, Her Journey from Martha O’Bryan Led to a Full-Time Career

From parenting classes, drop-in and drop-off childcare services, to furthering their education in our Adult Ed program and even learning new job skills in our Career Pathways boot camps and certification classes, Martha O’Bryan empowers participants to take the lead in goal setting, pursuit, and attainment. Just over a year ago, Liz, a single mom of two, was at a crossroads—working overnight shifts while caring for her boys during the day, with no support network after moving to Nashville. But Liz made a powerful choice: she decided to pursue her GED at Martha O’Bryan Center and create a better future for herself and her children.
At Martha O’Bryan, Liz received not only childcare and meals for her kids, but the emotional encouragement she needed to keep going. “They gave me the strength to break the cycle,” Liz shared.
After earning her GED through Martha O’Bryan’s Adult Education program, Liz enrolled in MOBC’s Career Pathways Information Technology (IT) program and soon earned her IT certification.
Liz’s journey culminated in a powerful moment when she was asked to share her journey at the Martha O’ Bryan Champions Breakfast in 2024, and made an open call to the audience for a chance to interview for an IT job, to help her advance to the next step in her journey.
Today, thanks to her resilience and drive, she now works at Zander Insurance, where she has taken a large step towards the career she’s dreamed of, along with the joy of being present for her children. “I get to put my kids to bed every night now,” Liz says. “That’s worth more than any paycheck.”
Liz’s journey is far from over. Her future goals include seeking to gain more education, increase her income, and provide her children with life experiences. In the meantime, she credits Martha O’Bryan for playing a pivotal role in her success, saying, “They were the family I never had. I wouldn’t be where I am without them.”
Liz’s story is a powerful reminder that it’s never too late to change the trajectory of your life. Her message to others: “Don’t wait for life to make room for your goals. Make room for them, now.”
