Danielle Gopp, a peer ambassador for the Our ChanceTN pilot from Dickson County, explains how the benefits cliff impacted her decision to turn down a job offer in favor of her family’s stability.
“I got a management job offer. I aced interview. I was so excited about this position. Ultimately, I did not officially take the position because, what I found out was, as I made more money it would put me in a situation where I would lose my food assistance. I would be working a lot more hours, so I’d be paying more childcare. My rent would go up, and I could possibly lose my son’s insurance. I just think that it’s going to really help families to not feel alone, to know that there is somebody out there that sees them, and they can be their true selves. They won’t be stuck in that vicious cycle of benefits, and they can soar.”
